Sport

The sport policy at the International School of South Africa focuses not merely on achievement in specific sports, but also on participation in a wide range of sports. The Sport Forum strives towards ensuring quality sport for the students by means of reliable and qualified coaching, sound administration, open communication and maximum utilisation of the valuable facilities that the School offers.

The official High School sports are:

  • First Term: Athletics, Basketball and Swimming;

  • Second Term: Hockey, Korfbal, Soccer and Volleyball;

  • Third Term: Basketball, Cricket, Soccer and Swimming.

An exciting new sport is being played by ISSA students called International Korfball - Many of our students have excelled at the sport and have been awarded Provincial and National colours.

Besides the official Inter-school competitive sport ISSA offers, a quality Inter-house sport program aims to involve all students in a sporting activity on a regular basis. The Inter-house program is followed on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings and ensures a good natured competitive spirit amongst all ISSA students as they compete for House points. Here the school strives to fulfil one of its goals by ensuring a balanced holistic education.

Other sports that are also included are Netball, Squash,Touch Rugby, Tennis, Table Tennis and Badminton. ISSA is also closely involved in the development of Sport in the local community. We also have private Tennis Coaching at the School, by a professional tennis coach.

The School offers excellent sporting facilties such as Squash and Tennis Courts, 3 Hockey fields, 2 cricket fields with 10 pitches, 4 soccer fields and 2 rugby fields.

Sport is an essential part of school life. “A sound mind in a sound body” is a good maxim and one which ISSA supports wholeheartedly.

The School has excellent facilities for sport. Sporting facilities enable students to participate in cricket, track and field athletics, swimming, football, rugby, hockey, tennis, netball, squash, badminton, gymnastics, volleyball, softball and basketball. ISSA also has an indoor gymnasium and multigym.

Students participate in compulsory competitive inter-house events every Monday and compete against other high schools on other days. Students with sufficient skill participate in district and provincial trials. Tours by sports teams to Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, as well as neighbouring countries, is a feature of our fixtures programme. The school has embarked on a programme to appoint at least one specialist coach in every major sporting code. At present this is the case in Cricket, where the school makes use of the services of an international professional.
